They smell like hamsters at pet stores because that's how they are taken care of. Like hamsters, kept in those nasty glass boxes with shavings and saw dust.
They don't smell any worse than a dog or a cat if they are taken care of properly.
I can not resist, this needs to go onto my ipod.
