Description

Not the best photo, I know. It's Toad, the white ferret (not an albino) and Roland the dark ferret.

No flash, macro setting and a shaky hand. They are so grainy because of the low light. Flash would of just washed them out totally. Mostly Toad.

No, they don't stink. No they are not mean.

They don't stink because I feed them high quality food and I keep their ferret room clean and I don't wash them a lot.

Washing them makes them smell more. It makes their bodies work harder to create the oils in their fur they need. So when you wash your ferret because he "stinks all the time" (not because you suck as a ferret owner) you're helping him right along by screwing his natural oils and making him make more. More, musky oil.

Oh, hey you feed crappy food like Marshalls Ferret Diet. That is also why your ferret smells. Why his coat is dull and he craps twice as much as a ferret on a higher quality diet. It's junk food, it's fish oil based and it reeks. It only ranks a FIVE on the food chart. It's GARBAGE. I don't care WHAT the pet store tells you. They just want your money.

You keep your ferret in a filthy cage or you use wood shavings at the bottom of the cage. DING DING DING. We have a winner. Wood shavings are UNHEALTHY, nasty, messy odor absorbing trash. Stop using them. Put blankets and comfortable clean hammocks and t-shirts or towels in your ferrets cage. WASH the bedding. Wash your ferrets hammocks and blankets and bedding. You wash your clothes don't you?

Just like dogs and cats. If a ferret isn't taken care of right it's going to STINK.

Pet Store ferrets smell because they are kept in small enclosures. They are usually feed low quality garbage kibble. They are almost always over stocked and usually filthy because Pet Stores DO NOT CARE.

Stick a bunch of toddlers in a play pin and don't clean them for a week. See how great THEY smell?

It's the same THING. Just like skin kids, ferrets depend on humans to take care of them. If you don't take care of them they suffer from it.

The bad pet owners always ruin it for the rest of us.

I hate having to explain this to people all the time.

So if you're going to reply to this with anything that talks about ferret smell please GTFO and educate yourself.

I've been considering adopting a ferret. This knowledge really helps me. Got any other tips for a first-time ferret mom?
